Alone Time is Essential to Mental Well Being

Hey everyone! With the holiday season in full swing, let’s talk about something super important for our mental well-being alone time. Yes, you heard me right, alone time.

Now, more than half of Americans, 56% to be exact, believe that carving out some solo moments is crucial for their mental health. But guess what? During the holidays, 46% of people report getting even less alone time. Picture this. You’re at a family gathering and Aunt Betty is on her third story about her cat’s dietary needs. Sound familiar? So what exactly is alone time?

It’s not just about physically being alone, it’s about mentally disconnecting too. Maybe you’re hiding in a closet or perhaps you’ve got noise cancelling headphones on while everyone else is singing carols. Whatever works for you. The benefits of alone time are huge. It helps with emotional regulation and reduces irritability. In fact, 36% of people say they get more irritable without it. Imagine feeling like a stressed out ball of holiday chaos and then, after some alone time, transforming into a Zen master.

But how do you actually get alone time during the holidays? Here are some practical and slightly humorous guy strategies. First, take a walk. I’m just going to get some fresh air for an hour. Next, run a solo errand. Anyone need anything from the very far away store? You could wake up early or, my personal favorite, take a few extra minutes in the bathroom. Who hasn’t done this?

Also, New Year’s Eve is a great natural time for reflection. Now, not everyone will understand your need for alone time. That’s okay. Practice politely but firmly excusing yourself from gatherings. A simple, I need a few minutes to recharge, goes a long way. Remember, alone time isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal. Older adults might not see its importance as much.

And for those feeling lonely, social connection is key. Everyone’s needs are different. The key is to find your balance. Pay attention to your mental and emotional needs to figure out the right amount of alone time for you. Prioritize self-care and enjoy the holidays.
